The Mission Behind the Guides

Hi, I’m Colton. I’m a college student who spends a lot of time outdoors. I'm usually hiking, exploring new trails, or just trying to catch a good sunset. Photography started as a way to capture those moments, but I quickly realized that what I saw in real life didn’t always match what came out of my camera. That’s what pulled me into RAW photo editing: figuring out how to bring those scenes back to life and make them feel the way they did in the moment.

I didn’t get into RAW photo editing because it was easy, in fact, it was the opposite. When I first opened an editing software, I was hit with sliders, panels, and settings I didn’t understand. Every tutorial I found either moved too fast or assumed I already knew the basics. It felt like I was missing something everyone else just got. So I did what most people do: I experimented, made a lot of bad edits, overcorrected everything, and slowly started figuring out what actually mattered.

Over time, things began to click. I realized that most edits come down to a handful of core tools used over and over again. Once I understood those, editing stopped feeling overwhelming and started feeling creative. That’s why I built this site - to create the kind of beginner-friendly resource I wish I had when I first started learning RAW editing. If you're here, you're probably where I once was: just trying to make sense of it all. And that’s exactly who this site is for.

This site was created to make learning RAW photo editing simple and approachable for beginners. Photo editing can feel overwhelming at first, especially with so many tools and settings, so my goal is to break everything down into clear, step-by-step guides that anyone can follow. Instead of trying to teach everything at once, I focus on the most commonly used tools so you can start improving your photos right away without getting lost in advanced features. These core tools are used in nearly every editing workflow, so what you learn here is just the beginning of your journey.

Darktable was chosen because it offers powerful tools while remaining completely free and open source. There are no subscriptions blocking features, and it's built by photographers for photographers. Despite being free, it is the preferred choice of many professionals. Darktable also keeps your original photo unchanged by storing edits in a separate file, and it works consistently across Windows, macOS, and Linux

Every guide includes images for each step to help you clearly see what’s happening as you edit and understand why each change is made. I believe the best way to learn is by doing, so my tutorials are designed to be practical, easy to follow, and focused on real results. I provide the exact photo used in each guide and show the effect of every adjustment, so you can follow along and see the results for yourself. Whether you’re editing your very first photo or building your confidence, this site is here to support you as you learn and grow your skills with Darktable.
